5 foods to ease the symptoms of arthritis

According to the Arthritis Foundation, nearly 54 million adults have been diagnosed with arthritis. More common in women than men, arthritis affects most people aged around 18 to 64 years. Although there is no permanent cure for this health disorder, treatment plans such as the intake of RA (rheumatoid arthritis) medicines are recommended by doctors to alleviate the symptoms. Additionally, there are certain foods that can ease the pain and discomfort associated with arthritis.

  • Fish
Fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties. People with rheumatoid arthritis can get a lot of relief from joint swelling, pain, and morning stiffness when fish is added to their diet. Best sources of omega-3 fatty acids are salmon, tuna, herring, anchovies, sardines, cold-water fish, and scallops. Taking fish oil supplements can also be beneficial. Three to four ounces of fish or consuming fish twice a week is recommended.
  • Soybeans
Another rich source of omega-3 fatty acids is soybeans. Along with easing the symptoms of arthritis, soybeans also help fight heart diseases. It can be added to the diet in the form of edamame, which is immature soybeans. Moreover, tofu and soymilk are also good options. Along with omega-3 fatty acids, soybeans are also high in protein and fiber and low in fat.
  • Vegetable-based oils
These include extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. Extra virgin olive oil is packed with healthy fats and oleocanthal. Oleocanthal is a compound with properties similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), such as RA medication used for pain relief. Additionally, safflower and avocado oils are loaded with nutrients and compounds that lower bad cholesterol levels. Walnut oil is one of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Red and purple colored fruits
These include cherries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Such fruits have high levels of anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory properties. A person suffering from arthritis should add this to their diet to alleviate inflammatory symptoms. Eating these fruits regularly can also help ease the pain and discomfort associated with various types of arthritis.
  • Broccoli
These look like miniature trees and are power-packed with many healthy nutrients. Broccoli is loaded with vitamins C and K. It is also rich in sulforaphane, which helps prevent or slows down the progression of osteoarthritis. Moreover, broccoli is enriched with calcium, which helps in strengthening the bones.
